Dear
potential government job applicant,
Once upon a time it was easy to write a government application.
You just had to attach an old resume to a brief cover letter
containing some rough notes about how you meet the position's
requirements (commonly known as selection criteria or core
capabilities).
But now more and more people want to get a government job which means
more competition and applications are becoming more
complex and more involved. I've been a government recruiter for years
and have seen the changes first hand, not to mention the high
quality applications that pass over my desk every day. No

can you just show that you meet the criteria, you have to show how and
why you are better than 50 other applicants, and that's before you even

two and follow the well known STAR, CAR or PAR rules for each
criterion (that is, write about a situation, your task, your action and
