this
in their applications,
and could have been selected for an interview if they had spent a
little more
time and effort on their written application. Of the
applicants that
were selected for an interview, 50% of them were not prepared
for their
interview, and could have done better in their overall
assessment if they
had spent more time preparing for the interview. These
applicants could
have been perfect for the job, they just didn't know how to communicate
with
the selection panel.
Preparation,
time and effort are all
essential ingredients for a successful job application.
So,
how do you make your responses
to selection criteria stand out from the crowd?
- Provide
solid and measurable
evidence that is relevant to the position,
- Target
your application to the job
description,
- Understand
what kind of criterion it
is, and respond appropriately. For example, is the criterion
based
on knowledge, skills and abilities, experience,
qualifications or work
related qualities? Each type of criterion will require a
different type,
and level of response.
- Assume
that all applicants are well
qualified for the job and make your application the marketing document
that
describes:
• why your skills are the most
relevant;
•
why your experience is the most beneficial;
•
why your understanding is the most developed; and
•
why you have the best personal qualities for the position.
Applying for a government job
is a very different process to applying for a 'normal' job.
There
are a number of reasons for these different recruitment processes, but
the
biggest is that the salaries for government employees comes from our
taxes, and
the government has an obligation to show the public that they are
spending
their money wisely, and employing the right people.
The process is
set and documented, and appeals against decisions can be made in
certain
situations.
